The first method of getting a pet in Sims 4 is to actually adopt them. Adopting is the best way of adding a pet to an existing family of Sims in Sims 4 if you don’t want to use a cheat. Here’s how adopting works.

You can either adopt a pet through the computer or the phone in The Sims 4. On the computer, select Household > Adopt > Adopt Cat / Adopt Dog, depending on what you want. On the phone, go to Household > Hire a Service > Adopt Cat / Adopt Dog after your Sim finishes the call.

And that’s about it. Shortly after you select to adopt a cat or a dog, the new pet will be added to your household. You can do this multiple times in a row as long as you have space for more Sims. Keep in mind that the maximum number of Sims per household is 8, and if you want to increase this number so you can have more pets, you must download the household limit mod.
