Give your Sims 4 builds a unique look with the addition of custom stairs.
Architecture is an important part of any Sims 4 lot, and for players who like to focus primarily on building, every detail matters. One area that is grossly underappreciated in The Sims 4 is the stairs. Other than adding ladders to the game in 2020 we haven’t seen any real innovations in the way sims traverse between floors, with stairs (and ladders) serving primarily as functional items over being stylish accents to your build.

Raise The Quality Of Your Builds With Custom Stairs
We’ve updated our list of custom stairs mods to bring you new & innovative creations. Every item shared on this list is meant to help you get more customized stairs, from expansions on vanilla stair assets to additional stair themes to completely new stair objects for you to play with. Many of these objects will have some quirks due to the way The Sims 4 handles stair coding, but overall they should enhance your build experience and give you a more custom feeling. So step right up, and check it out!
Elevare Part 1
Sleek & modern lines thrive in this set, bringing 4 new & trendy stair styles to The Sims 4. There are several railing & fence styles as well, so you can customize your stairs in a myriad of ways.
Four different styles of stairs, railings, and matching fences in a more modern style than what we usually find in The Sims 4 are found in this set. The backless stairs in particular can be pretty useful if you surround them with walls in whatever wallpaper/paint/siding you like, basically letting you theme them to whatever you want!
While you might not find use for an escalator in residential builds it adds a nice detail to any community build, particularly for shopping locations or set builds like an airport.
Unfortunately this is only an “escalator” in theory and it’s actually a regular staircase, but it still adds that certain something to the right kind of lot build.
This cool room set comes with multiple options for under-the-stairs utilization such as seating, shelves, desks, bedding, and more! There are 3 sets total so you’ll want to download them all in order to get the most options to use beneath your stairs.
The area beneath your stairs doesn’t have to be wasted space, so why not make it functional? This mod gives you a selection of dressers you can place beneath staircases, which match sets ShinoKCR has made previously, giving you a stylish upgrade to your understairs while making them useful at the same time!
Make use of the extra space under your staircases with these open shelves, which will allow you to add decorative objects to your understair spandrels. You’ll want to place your stairs first & remove the walls underneath (if applicable), decorate the shelves, and then place them beneath the stairs.
We tested & confirmed your that sims can reach books placed on this shelf, so you can add small functional items to it also!
These deco objects are designed to look like in-game vanilla stairs, and you can use them to round off corners or expand the “base” of your staircases. They’re slotted too, so you can put clutter items like shoes & toys on them, or decorate them with a sculpture or plant.
Part 2 of the add-on deco items for stairs that allow you to “expand” them and make parts decorative. Like Part 1, these are shelf-like items you can put on stair corners and edges to fill them out, with the advantage of added slots so you can place items on them too.
This collection comes with decorative carpets and rods that you can place over any full-size staircase, completely changing the look of the stairs! Adding the rods gives a more old-fashioned, stately look while sticking with the carpeting only offers a more casual feel.
For high-tech futuristic looking builds, these spiral stairs will give you the ability to travel between floors while looking modern & stylish. They use elevator tuning and require special steps to get them installed, so don’t forget to check the directions when you download them.
With the introduction of the Castle Estate Kit these stairs are almost a necessity! Build sprawling towers and strategic turrets with the game’s curved walls and then make the upper floors accessible with these stone stairs. Just make sure you check the instructions on the website so your sims can actually use them.
Four different styles of semi-functional stairs that make up for their lack of animations with the sheer range of styles expressed here. These stairs are actually using Elevator tuning so there’s a process to place the top & bottom segments; be sure to check the directions on the website (and the instructional .gif file included in the download) to use them correctly. The trouble is worth it though!
These stairs are designed to work with curved walls, and they’re partially functional (provided you follow the directions). Unfortunately they aren’t animated and instead just teleport your sims, but unlike some other custom stairs mods these can be used by Toddlers and Pets too! Due to the tricky nature of placing the stairs it’s important that you read the directions on the website for placing them correctly & making them usable by your sims.
The most innovative CC stair project to date, Project Spiral adds new, functional spiral staircases for The Sims 4! Unlike other spiral staircase mods, this one features full animations (lowest wall height only). You can still use these stairs for larger wall heights; sims will teleport instead of doing the full animation when using them.
The stairs are currently considered as being in beta, with future plans to add more animations, increase functionality, and make more improvements. Be sure to read all notes & conflicts before using them!
If you want spiral stairs that don’t look so modern, this rustic set is just the ticket. There are over 20 colors so you can match whatever cottage or cabin build you can conjure, though they require Functional Spiral Staircases (Project Spiral) to work correctly.
This collection features 2 styles of spiral stairs for all wall heights, with the option of downloading functional and/or deco versions of both. You will need Functional Spiral Staircases (Project Spiral) for the non-deco stairs to work, and since these stairs are made with HQ textures you will need to follow this tutorial to get the textures looking as crisp as possible.
Do you want your sims’ houses to have attics that they can actually access and use? With these CC attic “stairs” your sims will be able to visit the eaves of their homes, go through stored items, pull out their holiday decorations, etc. Unfortunately they don’t fold away but the nice thing about attic stairs is that you can sort of stick them anywhere, so you can place them in a corner or a closet where they’re not so obstructive.
We know that these aren’t stairs but they serve the same purpose, and the number of CC ladders out there is too small to merit a separate post! This set will give you 3 new ladder styles along with a decorative “guardrail” to protect sims from falling off. There are several heights for each guardrail so you can use them no matter your wall height.
As frustrating as it is that the standard stair offerings for The Sims 4 are limited, it’s incredible how modders in the community have found ways to bring more custom stairs to us players. Hopefully one day EA will take a note and bring us official spiral stairs, but in the meantime we have multiple amazing options to choose from. What’s your favorite set of stairs from this list? Let us know in the comments. Don’t trip, have fun, and happy simming!
I've been playing The Sims since the first game launched way back in 2000 and have been using CC for over 20 years. As a creative person with an interest in design, The Sims games have always been a great outlet for me whether I'm creating a cool sim, trying a new build style, or dabbling in CC making.
