EA released a short mini-teaser for the upcoming Life And Death Teaser Trailer set to release tomorrow, and our interests are piqued!

Life And Death Teaser

The Sims 4 Life And Death Expansion Pack will be releasing to players on Halloween, 31 October 2024. Tomorrow however EA will be giving us a First Look with a Life And Death Teaser Trailer, scheduled to drop at 8AM Pacific Standard Time. They couldn’t keep the excitement to themselves though and dropped a teaser for the teaser on their Twitter account, which while short, gives us a few things to go on! With the official Reveal Trailer releasing in less than 24 hours, let’s see what we can glean from this little hint before getting the full story tomorrow!

The Life And Death Teaser Trailer Teaser

This little tease is a 9 second long video that starts off looking at the back of a character that you might initially assume is Grim. However, the music swells to a dramatic reveal as the camera pans around to show that the robes are actually being donned by what appears to be a living, human sim as a foreboding chime is heard. The teaser ends with the intriguing message, “Embrace What’s Next.” What could this all mean?!

The Music

The music of the Life And Death Teaser can give us some clues as to what’s going on here. Usually when a positive situation occurs in The Sims 4 it is accompanied by a musical chime that tends to have a bright, ascending sound as it swells. Negative situations on the other hand tend to be accompanied by low, bold, dramatic jingles to go along with them. The way The Sims 4 uses musical prompts in the game easily tells us if the situation is good or bad before we even see what’s happening because the accompanying sounds convey the emotions we should be feeling.

Now, watch the Twitter Teaser above again and listen to the music. It starts off with a positive tone that grows higher as the music reaches its crescendo before striking hard with an ominous bell at the end. It’s as if the tone starts out as a positive thing but ends as something more sinister. One thing that stood out to us, however, is how similar this sound is to the sound that plays when a sim completes an Aspiration. The ending tone on the other hand, is definitely a reference to Grim.

The Sim

The sim in the trailer doesn’t appear to be anyone special at first glance. She’s got a striking face for sure, but it isn’t one that immediately jumps out at us as someone we should recognize. Her attire is quite eye-catching, though. While you might initially have thought she was wearing Grim’s robes, there are several differences in her outfit when compared to the “real thing.”

In this (somewhat cursed) image of Grim’s robes as taken via Sims 4 Studio we can immediately see there is a stark difference between the two outfits. The “official” Grim robe has a Freezer Boney and a book hanging from the belt via chains, and it’s much narrower to accommodate a skeletal form. The mysterious robe as worn by our Life And Death teaser sim does have a few things hanging from the belt (which are conveniently hidden in the clip) but the chain is different, so even if they are the same accoutrements it’s not the same mesh.

The other notable difference between the two outfits is that the robe donned by the living sim is adorned with decals that appear to be a winking skull with a plumbob carved into the forehead and what looks like stitches going around it to secure it.

The Decor

In our short look at the upcoming Expansion we did get to see a few pieces of Buy and Build content that definitely set a “vibe.” Everything is lit by candles and the wallpaper is emblazoned with corvids, possibly in a nod to the famous Edgar Allen Poe poem “The Raven.” We also get a glimpse at an opulent door and large windows with stained glass work reminding us of the windows that came with Realm of Magic, and some stately bookcases that also bear a striking resemblance to pieces on offer from that Game Pack.

The Gameplay Theory

Based on the nuggets of info sprinkled throughout the Life And Death Teaser, I have a theory on what it might be all about. My guess is that there will be a Secret Society or some kind of Death Cult in the Expansion Pack, whose mission is to either conquer death or find a way to pass back & forth between the worlds of the living and the dead. This theory is based on the following:

  • The music from the Life And Death teaser sounds like an Aspiration sinister in nature being achieved. This could involve ranking up in the Society/Cult, mastering a power (such as the ability to summon Grim on command), or fulfilling the main goals of the Society/Cult.
  • The outfit being worn by the sim is clearly meant to emulate Grim while also clearly not being his outfit. The symbolism of the skull tracks with how The Sims 4 styles their Club attire (with each Club having its own icon that you can unlock clothing and accessories for) and it was specifically designed to look like something that was hand-sewn onto the garment after it was produced.
  • The environment shown in the teaser could definitely be from a secret manor where the Society meets. Especially with how small the room is, it’s so opulent for what it is and you usually don’t see such ornate design unless it’s in an extravagant, old building. It’s also dusk/nighttime and if you’re going to do any sort of ritual regarding Death it seems like night would be the appropriate time to do it.

Catch The Trailer Tomorrow!

With the official Trailer releasing in less than 24 hours, this little Life And Death Teaser is like the bread that comes to your restaurant table before your appetizer arrives. It’s not something we asked for but is a nice surprise, and it does a great job for prepping our appetites with what comes next. You can see the Official Reveal Trailer on 3 October at 8AM Pacific Time by going here, or visit the link sooner to sign up for a notification for when it goes live.

Are you excited to see the Trailer? What do you think of our little theory? Let us know in the comments, and we’ll see you tomorrow after the Trailer drops! Spooky simming!
