Take caution, our dear Simmers! New fake mods for The Sims 4 have been reported by fellow people from our community. Check out the details in this article.
Malicious Mods for The Sims 4
In these previous weeks, we have heavily reported about malicious mods being uploaded through a variety of deceitful ways on mod-hosting platforms such as ModTheSims, CurseForge, and TheSimsResource. These cunning attacks were enough to cause great panic and fear to our otherwise safe community of Simmers, urging many of us to become extra cautious about our mod downloads (no more crazed download sprees for now, *sighs*) and encouraging other modders to create defense tools that will help curb these assaults. But just recently, another platform has been attacked by these vile individuals. In Nexus Mods, they uploaded text files that lead to harmful links, in the guise of legit mods.
New Fake Mods Discovered
According to @Cuupidon‘s Tumblr post and @Kuttoe‘s post on Discord, there were malicious content uploaded in Nexus Mods, a popular site for downloading content for The Sims 4 and other games. These two fake mods, uploaded by a user known as Fubruss, were the following:
- S4 CAS Tools
- Loading Screen Randomizer
These two mods were originally uploaded by CmarNYC and Tesuto on March 18, 2023 and January 9, 2024, respectively, in ModTheSims. But now, they have been spoofed in Nexus Mods. Upon acquiring any of these mods in the Nexus site, a text file will be downloaded on the computer. When the text file is opened, it includes another dowload link that comes with a trojan virus. The trojan virus will then install a malicious spyware on any unguarded device.
If you accidentally downloaded the links included on these text files from the spoofed S4 Cas Tools and Loading Screen Randomizer mods, delete the files right away from your computer and the Recycle Bin/Trash. Then, perform a full scan on your device. Additionally, you may install a Malware software that will help conduct a more intensive scan of your device.
How to Prevent Downloading Malicious and Fake Mods
Nowadays, it’s difficult to know which mods have been created for malicious intent, especially if these have been uploaded under the guise of well-known mods or through a legitimate platform like ModTheSims, CurseForge, TheSims Resource, Nexus Mods, and the like. However, hackers and scammers are getting more creative at this process, so it’s crucial to really stay alert during these times. Here’s how we can prevent downloading malicious and fake mods for The Sims 4 online:
- Before downloading any mod on the internet, validate information by checking the full details of the post and the comments about it. Conduct further research on sites like Reddit, Twitter, or Tumblr to see if the said mod is safe to download.
- As much as possible, do not download newly-released or newly-updated mods from any platform. Wait for a week or two before pressing that download button.
- Always run a full virus scan everytime there are new mod downloads on the computer.
- Install Modguard: Mod Malware Protection by TwistedMexi to get an added layer of protection for The Sims 4.
Conclusion: Stay Vigilant!
It’s almost impossible not to get tricked these days when using the internet, moreso when downloading mods and CC for our favorite game. Unethical people have slowly injected their wicked ways into these downloading platforms, striking fear among many of us in the community. However, we should focus on staying vigilant about these matters. As long as we practice the following tips above and keep ourselves regularly updated, we should be okay. Happy simming and stay safe always in these virtual spaces, our dear Simmers!
You have to be an especially scummy person to hijack a mod created by someone who has passed away, ugh.
Exactly, it’s so sad. Such a huge disrespect to the late CmarNYC.
Thank you for posting these articles. If it wasn’t for them, I would not know about this issue. I use Curseforge the most, used to use Mod the Sims and The Sims Resource, but as this keeps occurring, I am to the point I wait for the updates on Curseforge before installing them. But I will now wait before doing so.
Hi, Jacquie Fanning, you’re welcome! It is really our goal to keep all Simmers informed about these crucial things, as they are so rampant these days. Thus, we are so glad this article was able to help you. Stay safe and vigilant always!
