If you recently downloaded the mod Social Events – Unlimited Time, please read this important post!

Social Events Unlimited Time

Recently we shared with the sims community a warning about a potentially dangerous mod and it seems that the perpetrator is at it again. Yesterday a warning went out about a mod that was uploaded to CurseForge which consisted of stolen mod files, along with the mysterious and possibly harmful files that had previously been included in the Cult Mod V.2 incident.

Masquerading As Something New

There is indeed a legitimate “Social Events – Unlimited Time” mod that was uploaded on 16 January 2024 by MSQSIMS to The Sims Resource. Sadly our mysterious wannabe-hacker downloaded these files and repackaged them, along with their own potentially malicious files, and uploaded them to CurseForge under the username MySims4.

According to this video shared by Overwolf mods uploaded to CurseForge go through automated and manual moderation processes before being made available to the public, though it’s unclear what those processes are. Regardless, the stolen mod made its way to the platform and was available for an unspecified amount of time before the truth was discovered.

What to do if you downloaded “Social Events – Unlimited Time”

Social Events Unlimited Time

If you have downloaded this mod from The Sims Resource as linked above or in MSQSIMS’ social media posts you do not have to do anything, the mod is safe and free of potentially dangerous content. As of this writing, only users of CurseForge are affected.

CurseForge Users: From the CurseForge app, navigate to the My Mods tab and delete it. For added safety check your Mods folder for any files named SocialEvents.package or SocialEvents.script and if you find them, SHIFT + Delete them. Once you’ve removed the bad files, do a full virus scan of your system.

Is CurseForge Safe To Use?

CF 404

As CurseForge is the Official Mod Hub for The Sims 4 it’s reasonable to expect that you can trust the content available there and generally, that is the case. With this being the second known attempt at harming Sims 4 players in less than two weeks however, it’s more important than ever to be diligent about verifying the legitimacy of content you download. Here are some tips you can follow to make sure you’re getting safe content for your game:

  • Check the profile of the creator you’re about to download from. Are they new? Is this their only upload?
    • If the creator isn’t an established modder for the community and you’ve never heard of them before, steer clear. User “MySims4” had only been on the platform for 16 days before releasing the bad files.
    • If the modder is well-known but their profile is missing other popular creations, be suspicious of imitators posing as the real thing.
  • These days most modders will share their content on at least 2 platforms, so check if the mod has been uploaded to other places like Patreon or Tumblr.
  • Wait a few days before downloading any mod that was recently released so there’s time for it to be pulled if it’s not legitimate.
  • Run a virus check before starting The Sims 4 after you install new mods.

Please be safe out there!
