There were so many details in yesterday’s developer livestream that we couldn’t cover it all in a single post! Here’s a more in-depth look at the Reaper Career.
The Sims 4 has had a variety of different job types added to its roster over time, staring with the standard rabbithole career and eventually adding part time jobs, gigs, freelance work, and Active Careers to its repertoire. We haven’t had a new Active Career in a while though, with the last one coming in Dream Home Decorator back in 2021 (technically High School Years gave Teens an “Active Career” by giving us the ability to follow them to school, but I don’t think that should count).
Next week The Sims 4 Life & Death releases and along with a typical rabbithole job track there’s a new Active one coming with the Reaper Career line. This Career takes you to work with the infamous Grim, reaping souls to fill a quota and aiming to replace him as Employee Of The Month for once. Here’s what we know about the Reaper Career based on yesterday’s stream!
The Reaper Career – Welcome To The N.W.D.D.
If you have Get To Work you’ll find that the Reaper Career has a similar flavor to that of the Detective Career track, in that your sim will be spending time at their “Headlessquarters” and also going out into the field. The N.W.D.D. (Netherworld Department of Death) is the main hub for Grim and his employees, known as Grimterns. Grimterns have tasks to perform every workday which, depending on your career level, will take you from the office to the field and back again. Office tasks include things like practicing Reaping on a dummy sim, reporting findings to Grim, studying Death Trends, and repairing the Soul Portal.
To get work out in the field Grimterns will need to use the Scrying Bowl to Scry for Assignments. Scrying is the practice of using a reflective element such as a mirror, vessel of water, or crystal ball to peer outside of the here and now for things like fortunes, prophecies, or contact with the dead. Your sim will Scry and receive a pop-up explaining their assignment, and they can use the Scrying Bowl again to travel to the assignment location.
Out Here In The Field
There are a variety of different assignments your sim can receive as part of the Reaper Career. In the livestream demo, our sim was given the assignment to reap souls that were the victim of a mischievous Cowplant.
In this situation the first thing your Reaper sim needs to do is determine the Cause of Death. They can investigate things such as checking the position of the body and limbs, verifying pulse and temperature, and looking for things like bruises or signs of a lightning strike. Once they’re confident in the cause of sims’ demises, they can Reap these souls for their Soul Quota. As your sim gets more experience in the Reaper Career they can unlock different Reaping styles, and doing things like Scythe Maintenance can increase their chances of a successful Reaping attempt.
Reapers will have a Soul Quota they need to meet, and doing so will net them prizes from big boss Grim. Sometimes a sim may try to beg you to spare them, and you have the option of obliging them if you wish. Short on your Soul Quota? Visit the Mysterious Merchant in Crow’s Crossing and purchase Souls from him to supplement your earnings (just try not to think about how he got those Souls in the first place).
More on SNOOTYSIMS: Who needs natural causes when you can kill your sims with cheats?
Saving Special Sims
Since the game needs sims to kill for you to have Souls to Reap, you might find yourself in a sticky situation where the character on the other end of the scythe is a sim you’ve created or played with. The game will try to choose random sims to kill off but in the event that a playable sim is on the slab, you do have the option to let them live. Or, you can go with the flow and kill them off to see where their story takes you!
Mastering The Reaper Career
While the livestream didn’t give us any information on what happens when a sim reaches level 10 of the Reaper Career, we can take some guesses based on the information that we have. In the stream, the sim being played was at level 9 and while their job tasks were different, their appearance was the same as lower-level employees in that they all wear the same Reaper robe. In the Official Gameplay Trailer however, we see a scrying Reaper adorned in a red and black robe with glowing details. Our best guess is that sims will unlock this special Reaper Robe when they reach the top of the career.
Closing Thoughts
With the Reaper Career being the first Active Career we’ve had in years, it’s so exciting to see what kind of experiences our Reaper sims will get into! Will they be the boss’ top performer? Fumble their Reaping so bad they need to buy extra Souls? Cause an awkward Christmas dinner after Reaping their own family member? It’s up to players to decide!

But we’d love to hear your thoughts here on this new career! Is it something you think you’ll play? Will you be a benevolent Reaper, or disconnect from the job and gather as many Souls as you can?
