When you wish your sims’ floors “zigged” instead of “zagged,” try a quarter or half tile placement to mix things up!
The Sims 4 has made it easier than ever before to really get into the builds you create and there are a lot of lesser-known little tricks you can use to go even further. One of the easiest is a quarter or half tile floor, which opens up a variety of possibilities for unique rooms.
Quarter or Half Tile Floors – How To Do It?
In The Sims 4 you have the option of placing whole tiles or quarter tiles, and placing 2 quarter tiles next to each other creates a half tile. Placing quarter and half tiles is easy. With the Flooring Tool selected:
- On PC or MacOS hit Ctrl + F on your keyboard
- On Xbox hit the X button
- On PlayStation hit the ▢ (square) button
And now you’re in quarter-tile mode! Place your floor tiles like usual and hit the same buttons/keys again to go back to full tile mode.
Using Quarter and Half Tile Floors
Why would you want to know how to do these smaller floor tiles, anyhow? Do they make that much of a difference? For simmers who aren’t as focused on building or design, you may never worry or care about floor patterns and that’s totally fine. But, there are a lot of useful ways people can use quarter and half tiles.
For starters, it’s an easy way to have two different floor patterns blend into one another in the case of a room with split-use. As an example many apartments and smaller homes might have the kitchen/dining/living area all be one space, and you can use flooring to carve out precisely how much of the area you want dedicated to each purpose.
Using quarter and half tiles with flooring that has multiple swatches opens up the possibilities for a range of unique, custom-designed flooring patterns. It’s even more impactful if the flooring you’re using has its own pattern, making the potential even greater.
Going even further, mix colors and shapes with your various floor tile sizes to make totally one-of-a-kind floor murals and designs reminiscent of a mosaic. Give your community lots their own iconic flooring or do up those mansion builds with a bespoke, hand-laid tile design. Squares, diamonds, stripes, and more are at your disposal with quarter and half tiles!
One last tip? You can toggle the Grid on and off to make things easier to see. Use the G key on PC/MasOS, L2 on Xbox, or L2+R2 on PlayStation.

Don’t Forget To Look Up!
With so much potential for cool & unique designs, why stick to just the floor? An oft-forgotten feature, The Sims 4 added the option of paintable ceilings in summer 2023. You can use the tricks we’ve shared here for floors and translate them to the ceilings, giving your rooms a sky-blue lid, beautiful wood patterns, or totally custom artwork.
Final Thoughts
If you want to spruce up the surface your sims spend the most time on, it’s time to spice up those floors!
