Make your old-fashioned saves feel more realistic with low-tech replacement mods for those everyday electronics, cookware, and more.
If you prefer to play The Sims on a more old-fashioned timeline, the tech-forward aspects of the game such as mobile phones and computers can very easily pull you out of the immersion. Some of these things are easy to avoid (for example, keeping computers out of your builds) but other things, like the aforementioned phones, are woven into regular play and can’t really be avoided.
Since we can’t really remove these things from the game completely without breaking something we go to the next best thing: replacing them. In many cases that means a full-on default replacement or override which will change every single version of that item in the game. Some of the mods we’re sharing today aren’t overrides (which means you’ll have to individually replace every instance of the item on your own), but they’re still useful enough to share.
Our Favorite Low-Tech Replacement Mods
Whether you’re stretching back centuries to the Old West and Victorian Eras, going all the way to Medieval times, or even just hopping back a few decades to the 1950’s, you’ll find at least one replacement mod on our list to suit your needs.
Timeless: A World Decluttering Mod (Version 1)
The Timeless mod is incredibly handy for simmers who play in historical saves along with anyone who appreciates a calmer game. It affects Willow Creek, Oasis Springs, Magnolia Promenade, Windenburg, Brindleton Bay, and Forgotten Hollow by removing or replacing modern-looking items, such as cars, newer buildings and lights, billboards, city skylines, freeways, and more! I have to admit that when looking at preview images for this mod I was struck with how peaceful everything looks, and am a bit jealous of the sims who get to live there!
Unfortunately pandorasimbox hasn’t shared any new content in a few years so it’s unclear if their planned Version 2 will ever release, but Version 1 is still a great resource for historical simmers.
Simmer MissChipsa has created a variety of replacements for historical saves that turn the Neighborhood View screen into a medieval map. Though not every map has been replaced in this style, there are a lot to choose from (and if you’re really bothered by it just don’t visit the worlds that overrides haven’t been made for).
Cell phones are one of those necessary evils in The Sims 4 as there are some interactions that are limited to phones/computers or phones only. Seeing a sim in a historical save whip out their mobile really shatters the immersion, but with this mod that’s no longer a problem! Your sims’ phones will be replaced with a small booklet and their tapping of the screen will merely look like the sim is following along with their finger as they read.
This is a great standalone item even if you don’t play historical games! The object functions as a computer, but it looks and animates like the sim is writing on a piece of paper with quill instead. Any tech-averse sims no matter the era can appreciate such an object.
Is it a book or a computer? A little of both! This object is a functional computer that’s meshed to look like a simple book. While not an override, it’s a great asset to have if you play old-fashioned saves but your sim still needs access to a PC for their job or Aspiration.
Use this mod to add a touch of whimsy, elegance, or old-fashioned vibes to your sims when they write, as their typical pencil will now be replaced with a dainty feather quill.
Texture replacements for sims’ homework along with a full pencil replacement using a large feathered quill. You can pick and choose which file(s) to use so you can combine them with other overrides if you’d like.
Medieval Eastern Homework Override For Kids And Teens
Don’t let your young historical sims do poorly in school because their homework doesn’t match your aesthetic! With this override, homework will now have a much more “traditional” look to it.
Historical players with the Get Together EP probably don’t use the Infant carrier much because of how out-of-place it looks. With this override mod you can now enjoy the convenience of hands-free baby carrying no matter what decade you’re playing in!
If you use the sack lunch mechanic as introduced in the Parenthood Game Pack, you’ll be pleased to find that your historical sims now look a bit more realistic while doing it.
Modern metal fishing rods will certainly look awry when seen in a vintage play through, while this simple stick design blends into a number of different eras.
Part 2 of this override project changes the look of several food prep boards, measuring cups, ingredients, and other cooking tools to have a more old-fashioned appearance.
Coffee as we know it dates back to the 15th century, while tea is almost as old as time itself. It’s not unexpected to see a turn-of-the-century sim starting their day with a cup ‘o joe, or one from before the dawn of electricity brewing up a warm cuppa. This mod is a 2-parter that comes with a new object as well as some replacements: a coffee maker as converted from the game Oblivion and replacement meshes and textures for the mugs that sims spawn when having coffee or tea.
We couldn’t find a default replacement for the Tea Magic Personal Brewer but we did find the next best thing. Instead of taking up counter space with a uni-tasking machine, use this mod to enable sims to brew their tea on the stove like their ancestors might have done! You don’t even need to be playing a historical save to appreciate the realism that this mod brings.
The Parenthood Game Pack gives sims the ability to set the table for meals by adding plates, napkins, and silverware. The design options are cute and all, but don’t really fit in homes with an older sense of style. Using this replacement mod will gives your sims’ dishes a more dated look while having some styles that are modern enough for recent times.
While a mop is nowhere near the pinnacle of modern tech, the plastic handle and synthetic head of The Sims 4‘s default object looks very out of place when you go back not even 100 years. A simple replacement transforms that futuristic mop into an old-fashioned broom that works just as well for a play through from 100 years ago as it does a play through from 1000 years ago!
Grim Reaper Tablet Override For Historical Saves (Cursed Book)
One thing sims can never get away from no matter the time period is their inevitable demise, and Grim is the longest-employed sim in existence! Dial-back that fancy tablet he uses to tally souls with this simple mod that transforms it into a truly timeless tome.
Now you can go back a few decades or even a few centuries in The Sims 4 and fully enjoy the game without being taken out of the story. Whether you want to dial back some newer electronics to make things a little dated or want a full-on ancient play through, these replacement mods will get you in that old-timey headspace.
Is there a replacement mod we missed or an object you want replaced in the game that we didn’t mention? If so, let us know in the comments!
