The Sims 4 has got dozens of different skills for your sims to master, and sometimes you don’t want to put in the hard work yourself. Skills cheats are a simple and easy way to set your sims’ skills to the exact level you want them to be, whether you’re trying to give them a little push or turn them into a skilled master!
Why Use Skills Cheats?
There are several reasons why you might need to utilize skill cheats. The most obvious reason would be to skip the work of doing it yourself if you need your sim at a certain skill level in a short period of time, like for getting a work promotion or completing a time-sensitive task. It’s also very useful for players who like to add their own “townies” into the world with pre-established backstories, which include relationships, interests, and skills.
When using these cheats you can enter whatever level you want; you don’t have to max out the skill if you don’t want to! Skill cheats can be used to lower a sim’s skills as well, so if you need to dial back their abilities for whatever reason you can do it through cheats. No matter the reason or skill, we’ve got the cheat for it.
Understanding the Skill Cheat
Before getting into the different skills, make sure to activate testingcheats. This is a habit you want to get into whenever you plan on using cheat codes.
The way the game organizes skill cheats is that they all live under one main code:
stats.set_skill_level
Once you get this part of the cheat code committed to memory, you’re already halfway there! From here, we tell the game which skill we’re manipulating, and at what level. Most of the skill names are pretty obvious so eventually you’ll be able to play around with different skill cheats without having to look up their names.
The entire cheat layout generally goes as follows:
stats.set_skill_level [MAJOR/MINOR]_[SKILL NAME] [LEVEL# 1-15]
It looks a little daunting when written out like this, but keep reading and we promise it’ll make more sense! You can always copy & paste the cheats directly from this article if that’s easier for you.
Major, Minor, & Hidden Skills
Skills in the Sims 4 are divided up between major skills, minor skills, and hidden skills. Major skills are skills that tend to have a larger effect on your sim’s life, such as skills relating to college majors, career advancement, or aspirations. Minor skills are skills that your sim tends to earn more passively which don’t have huge effects on their day-to-day life but are still things that will grow & improve with time, such as dancing or learning a local culture. Hidden skills tend to be exclusive to the activity they’re connected to, and have no real bearing on the game outside of that.
Most of the skills we can change are major skills, but if you find you’re trying to use a skill cheat and it’s just not working, it may be because it’s classified as a minor or hidden skill instead.
Skill Levels
While most of them max out at level 10, it’s not the case with every skill. Some offer a maximum of 10 levels, some have 5 levels, and some only 3; there’s even one that goes up to 15! One of the best ways to see this is through toddler skills; between the shorter life stage and the limited number of things to learn, it would be impractical to have 10 whole levels for each skill your toddler is trying to master. This is good to keep in mind if you’re trying to change a skill and it’s not advancing; you may be trying to go higher than the skill can actually reach.
Base Game Skills Cheats
A majority of the skills available to your sims come in the base game. There are special skills cheats for children & toddlers as well, and will not affect adult sims when these skill cheats are entered. Skills for toddlers and children can lead to a boost in adult skills, however!

Troubleshooting
As with Sims 4 cheats in general, skills cheats can sometimes malfunction. There can be many reasons as to why you can’t level a certain skill with a cheat in the game:
- You don’t have testingcheats on
- The cheat has been removed from the game due to an update
- You’ve set the skill level above the max (example: entering stats.set_skill_level Minor_Dancing 7 when the Dancing skill maxes at level 5)
- You’ve confused Major and Minor (example: entering stats.set_skill_level Major_Medium 4 when the Medium skill is classified a Minor skill
- Mods/CC interfere with the cheat
