Happy Kwanzaa, fellow simmers! Today is the first of a week-long celebration designed to honor African Americans, and we have some lovely Kwanzaa CC to share with you!
Kwanzaa is a special 7-day festival created in 1966 California USA, as a way for black Americans to celebrate their culture with an alternative to Christmas. It’s well known that the United States has a shameful and embarrassing history when it comes to Black Americans, and Kwanzaa was initially created to give them their own space to celebrate African heritage, culture, and identity.
The Kinara bears the colors red, black, and green to symbolize the past and future of Black Americans. The Kikombe cha Umoja is a unity cup that symbolizes thankfulness to African ancestors, and crops with fruit and corn being particularly prevalent symbols.
As time has gone on it has evolved into a celebration that occurs alongside Christmas, versus instead of Christmas, and continues being a vital part of Black American Culture today. It’s also spread to several other countries such as Jamaica, Brazil, and France. You can read more about the history of Kwanzaa here.
