The Sims franchise turns 25 next month! Here’s all the exciting news that was shared in today’s Behind The Sims 25th stream.

Can you believe that next month marks 25 years since the release of the first The Sims game? If you’re an old player like me you were probably there from the beginning, and have watched the franchise evolve with time. A lot has happened in 2½ decades, and more is coming this year!
Behind The Sims 25 Announcements
Although this was a short video clocking in at just over 7 minutes, a lot of information was shared in regards to The Sims 4 and other properties. Some of these changes have already been implemented, with more coming soon!
Updates Out Today
To kick things off there are new changes that have dropped for The Sims 4 today. The first one you’ll notice as soon as you launch the game, as the main menu screen has been updated with a new look that has your currently played household front-and-center. Tip: Click the 3 dots on the top right to get to the other menu options such as Graphics Settings and to Exit.
I will note that the sims in my game appear much smaller than what was shown in the Behind The Sims 25 stream, but that may be due to my being on PC and the example from the stream being console.
Additionally, with all the free updates the base game has received over the years some classic Townie Households have been updated and are so much better! In your Library you will now find Legacy and Updated versions of houses for the following Households:
- Spencer-Kim-Lewis
- BFF
- Goth
- Pancakes
- Landgraab
- Roomies
- Zest
- Caliente
These updated Lots will appear in New Saves moving forward.
Upcoming Events For The Sims’ 25th Birthday
Over the next 6 weeks there will be multiple Events to help celebrate a quarter-century of The Sims.
New Kits Dropping January 16, With More Creator Kits Coming
Last week we shared the news that 3 new Kits were being released on 16 January, marking multiple changes to the Kit format. Typically Kits consist of CAS or Buy/Build content with one Kit focused on each per release. This time around we will not only be getting 2 Kits of mixed CAS/Buy/Build content, we’re also receiving the first Creator Kit of the year which was made in collaboration with well-known simmer LilSimsie.
Now that the news is officially out, she’s released a video discussing it along with other update info:
More Creator Kits are on the way, with collabs by Pierisim and Madlen releasing next month, and aharris00brittney and Syboulette getting their own Creator Kits later this year.
Nostalgia Now/Blast From The Past Event
Long-term simmers like me will be thrilled with the Nostalgia Now/Blast From The Past Event launching in late January, bringing some iconic items from previous mainline games into The Sims 4. These items include house phones, inflatable furniture, and a pop-out cake from The Sims 1, an alarm clock and Dina Caliente’s iconic dress from The Sims 2, and a high-tech outfit, glasses, necklace, and boots from The Sims 3. There are also limited-time collectible milk cartons which are a reference to Bella Goth’s disappearance in The Sims 2, and a new Aspiration and Music genre.
25 Hour Anniversary Stream, Events, and Free Stuff
February 4th is the official birthday of The Sims and to celebrate, there will a 25-hour livestream. Not much was shared about the contents of the stream other than that it will showcase some of our favorite simmers, and a special guest we might know. We’ll likely see simmers in different time zones over the course of the stream, and the special guest could be anyone! An iconic Sims player, Will Wright, or maybe even one of our favorite sims! Make sure you’re subscribed to their YouTube channel so you can participate!
Free Stuff For The Sims 4 Base Game
New basics will be coming to CAS as well as new Buy/Build items on February 4. We’ll be getting 2 new hairs with baby hairs added to 3 older styles, a goatee, and a new Toddler hairstyle, plus clothes for younger sims too. Expect more clothing basics like a turtleneck, body suit, bike shorts, a fitted cap, gold chain, pearl necklace, and more. Buy/Build is getting new windows and doors, a wooden kitchen counter and cabinet set, another pirate ship playground item featuring Voidcritters, and more.
Motherlode Season
The next roadmap will be for “Motherlode Season” inspired by the iconic cheat. There weren’t any details shared but we can expect a roadmap release soon which will hopefully have more information.
Other Sims Games
The Sims 4 wasn’t the only game getting some love on the Behind The Sims 25 stream!
The Sims 3 Gets An Update
Although this wasn’t mentioned in the Behind The Sims 25 stream, many players were surprised to find that The Sims 3 got an update recently. It seems that the main reason behind the update was to make the game easier to run on newer, higher-end PCs. There is speculation that there might be more to it, such as a remaster, but nothing is confirmed.
Shedding Light On The Sims Freeplay
The Sims Freeplay has a huge lighting update which totally changes the feel of the game. Lights will now behave realistically, bouncing off of surfaces and really setting the mood. Additionally, there will be some nostalgic updates bringing back the vibes of the 2000’s with Events and gifts to look forward to.
MySims Cozy Bundle Is Coming To PC!
Last autumn two of the MySims games from the 2010s were remastered and released for the Nintendo Switch. Today the team announced that the beloved series was spreading further, with the MySims: Cozy Bundle coming to PC.
And Even More To Look Forward To!
The Behind The Sims 25th stream ended with a few other teasers to look forward to. They mentioned upcoming giveaways, along with a 25th anniversary drop in The Sims Merch Store. Looking at the timeline, we’re also getting something new on the 25th of February but the team hasn’t spilled yet!
