The Volleyball Mod: Group Matches from UTOPYA_cc is bringing a huge upgrade to volleyball gameplay in The Sims 4. Instead of limiting your Sims to the original one-on-one experience, this update lets four Sims jump into a proper group match with two players on each team.

And honestly, this sounds like such a fun addition for active Sims, couples, friends, and even double dates. The creator has spent years working toward a synchronized four-Sim interaction system, and this update finally makes that possible.

Volleyball Mod: Group Matches! Introduces Four-Sim Games

The biggest feature in this update is, of course, the new four-Sim volleyball system. Your Sims can now run around, jump, fall, reposition themselves, celebrate together, and actually work as a team during a continuous match.

Creating this system was a major technical challenge for UTOPYA_cc. The creator explained that they had been trying to make a proper synchronized four-Sim interaction for around two or three years, so getting everything to work together is a pretty big achievement for the mod.

The animations were another major part of the project. With four Sims needing to move and react together, even the footwork required multiple rounds of reworking. The result is intended to make matches feel much more active instead of having Sims simply stand beside the net and hit the ball back and forth.

How to Start Playing Volleyball

Getting your Sims onto the court is pretty simple. You first need to purchase the new Volleyball Net from Build/Buy Mode by searching for “Volleyball Net.” The net itself is the only required object, so you don’t need to create an entire dedicated volleyball court.

There is an optional Volleyball Court Mat too, which can be placed underneath the net if you want the area to actually look like a volleyball court. More importantly, the mat can help you see how much open space your Sims will need.

That’s worth keeping in mind because the animations cover quite a large area. Sims will run, jump, fall, move toward each other, and celebrate during the match, so leaving plenty of room around the net will help everything run more smoothly.

Three New Volleyball Group Interactions

The update currently focuses entirely on four-Sim matches. When you click on the Volleyball Net, you’ll find three group interactions, and all of them use the same basic setup of two Sims versus two Sims.

The difference is the relationship between the Sims and the type of match you’re setting up. The creator also clarified that these games are loosely inspired by beach volleyball, rather than attempting to reproduce every official volleyball rule.

Play Team Volleyball

Play Team Volleyball is the straightforward friendly option. Choose one Sim as your teammate and compete against two other Sims.

There are no romance requirements here, making this perfect for friends, family members, roommates, or basically any four Sims you want to throw into a match together.

Play Couple Volleyball Against Couple

Want to turn volleyball into a double date? Play Couple Volleyball Against Couple lets your Sim team up with their romantic partner and compete against another couple.

The interaction also includes special romantic animations that can appear during the match. The mod checks the Romance relationship between partners and whether they’ve had their First Kiss, allowing the romantic interactions to become more varied as their relationship develops.

Your Sims only need at least 10 Romance to use the interaction, while reaching 60 Romance unlocks the possibility of the full romantic animation pool. That doesn’t mean every romantic animation will happen automatically, though, since the more intimate moments are still chance-based.

Play Couple Volleyball Against Team

The third option, Play Couple Volleyball Against Team, keeps your Sim and their partner together on one team while the opposing side consists of two unrelated Sims.

This is a nice middle ground between the regular team match and the full couple-versus-couple experience. The same dynamic Romance system applies, so couples with a stronger relationship can potentially see more romantic interactions during their games.

Volleyball Matches Now Have Real Stakes

The new matches aren’t simply about watching your Sims hit a ball around. A team needs to reach 4 points before the opposing team to win, and your Sims’ Fitness Skill can influence how likely they are to score.

Higher Fitness gives a Sim an advantage, but it doesn’t guarantee victory. There’s still some randomness involved, meaning even a less-fit Sim can get lucky and pull off a win.

This makes the matches a little less predictable, which is probably a good thing. Your Level 10 Fitness Sim shouldn’t automatically destroy everyone every single time.

Fitness Skill Has One Important Limitation

There is one thing players should know about how Fitness is calculated. For your team, the game checks the Fitness Skill of the active Sim who starts the Volleyball interaction, rather than checking both teammates.

So if your active Sim has Fitness Level 2 while their teammate has Fitness Level 10, the game will use the Level 2 Sim’s Fitness. If you want the higher Fitness Skill to represent your team, simply switch to that Sim before clicking the Volleyball Net.

The opposing team works differently because the game can check both Sims on that side. It’s a small limitation, but one worth remembering before starting an important championship match.

Choose Between Competitive and Random Matches

Players can also decide whether Fitness Skill should affect the outcome. The Play Competitively setting is enabled by default, meaning Fitness will influence your Sims’ chances of winning.

If you’d rather leave everything to chance, you can disable the setting and make the match completely random. To change it, enable testingcheats true, then Shift-click the Volleyball Net and look for Play Competitively in the debug interactions.

The setting is based on the active Sim who starts the match, so you don’t need to change it separately for every participant.

New Moodlets Make Winning and Losing More Fun

The four-Sim matches also come with their own outcome moodlets. Winning can give your Sims positive reactions, while losing can leave them feeling frustrated or sad.

Each of the three match types has its own set of outcome moodlets, giving the different game modes a little more personality. Team matches focus on the competition, while the couple variations add relationship-focused reactions.

For Couple vs Team and Couple vs Couple matches, winning alongside a romantic partner can also trigger additional romantic moodlets when the couple has at least 30 Romance. Stronger variations become possible at 60+ Romance, although these are still chance-based rather than guaranteed.

Keep an Eye on the Score

You won’t need a separate scoreboard taking up space on your screen. The current score can be followed through your Sims’ active moodlets.

Whenever a team scores, the scoring Sim receives a moodlet showing the team’s current score. It’s a simple way to keep track of how close everyone is to winning while letting the actual match stay the focus.

A Helpful Reset Option for Four-Sim Matches

Because four Sims are being synchronized through one continuous custom interaction, occasional issues can still happen. A Sim might take too long to start, stop unexpectedly, leave part of the interaction in their queue, or continue an animation after everyone else has finished.

To make these situations easier to fix, UTOPYA_cc has added a Reset Volleyball Participants debug interaction. After enabling testingcheats true, Shift-click the Volleyball Net and select the reset option.

You’ll then be able to select the four Sims who participated in the match. This clears leftover Volleyball interactions and lets you start the game again without old interactions getting in the way.

Final Thoughts

The Volleyball Mod: Group Matches! is a seriously ambitious expansion for Sims who love sports and group activities. Four Sims playing together, team-based matches, Fitness-influenced outcomes, relationship-based animations, competitive settings, and new moodlets give volleyball a lot more depth than a simple casual activity.
