Built specifically for Residential Rentals, the mod creates a much more natural apartment experience by allowing Sims to visit neighboring units through a new seamless “Drop By” system. Instead of traveling the traditional way, your Sim can head over to a neighbor’s door and visit them directly, making apartment communities feel more alive than ever.

The Sims 4 normally limits gameplay to a single loaded lot at a time. The Open Apartments Mod works around this limitation by saving and instancing neighboring rental units whenever your Sim decides to visit.

Once a neighboring apartment has been prepared, players can click on a neighbor’s front door or anywhere inside their unit and choose between two options: the traditional Travel interaction or the new Drop By feature. Not everyone will always be available, however. Sims currently at work or school remain away until their shift or school day ends. Some household members are not yet supported by the system, including horses, farm animals, and small pets.

This helps maintain realistic schedules while ensuring apartment visits feel believable and dynamic.

Neighbors Behave Like Real Neighbors

One of the most interesting parts of the Open Apartments Mod is how it treats your Sims as actual guests rather than temporary residents. Neighboring households continue following their own routines while your Sim is visiting.

Only the Sims originally selected for the Drop By interaction can automatically enter the apartment. Other members of your active household can gain access simply by being directed into the unit once or interacting with an object inside.

The result is a much more believable apartment experience where neighbors continue living their lives while your Sims stop by for a visit.

Managing Visits and Apartment Access

Every Drop By visit is managed through a dedicated event system. Only one Drop By can be active at a time, helping keep everything stable and organized.

Visits can end manually whenever players choose, or they will automatically conclude once every Child-aged or older resident leaves for work or school. Once the event ends, neighbors return to their own units and the temporary setup is cleaned up.

Players can also control whether visiting neighbors are allowed to enter their own apartment. Clicking your front door provides options to either allow or prevent a specific household from entering, giving you greater control over apartment interactions.

Setting Up the Open Apartments Mod

The setup process is largely automatic. Before a neighboring apartment can be visited, the Open Apartments Mod needs to capture information about that unit.

This can happen simply by loading the apartment normally, traveling there through standard gameplay, or opening the building in Build Mode through Manage Worlds. The latter option captures every unit in the building at once, making it the quickest preparation method for larger rental properties.

Captured apartment data is stored separately alongside your save file and updates automatically whenever changes are made to the lot. In most cases, players only need to capture a unit once before enjoying seamless visits in the future.

Current Limitations Players Should Know About

As impressive as the system is, there are a few limitations during this early release. Certain modular furniture pieces such as corner counters and corner cabinets may not visually connect correctly in instanced apartments.

The appropriateness system is also still fairly basic. Neighbors can react when Sims behave inappropriately, but they do not yet track repeated offenses the same way standard visits do.

Features such as break-ins, eavesdropping, and landlord-related interactions are not currently supported, although these ideas are already being considered for future updates.

Future Plans Look Promising

Tyjokr has already shared several ideas for expanding the mod in future releases. Relationship-aware visits are one of the most exciting possibilities, allowing neighbors to refuse entry if they dislike your Sims.

Additional plans include improving the appropriateness system, adding custom neighbor events, introducing break-ins and eavesdropping mechanics, and potentially expanding the technology to other lot types beyond Residential Rentals.

The Open Apartments Mod is confirmed to work alongside Better Apartment & Rental Behaviors by lunar_britney. However, players should be aware that it will likely conflict with Dimmed Inactive Rentals and Labeled Rental Units by TwistedMexi since Open Apartments already includes similar functionality.

According to the creator, the mod does not directly overwrite game files and has been designed with compatibility in mind, though players should always test carefully when using multiple gameplay mods.
