Discover The Story Behind Llama Lore in The Sims, from Maxis’ original mascot to Cottage Living and the hilarious references hidden across the series.

SnootySims Llama Lore

If you’ve ever wondered why llamas seem to appear everywhere in The Story Behind Llama Lore in The Sims, EA has finally shared the answer. From silly jokes and hidden references to living farm animals and even mythical llamacorns, the beloved llama has become one of the biggest symbols of The Sims franchise.

As it turns out, these fluffy troublemakers weren’t originally planned as such a huge part of the series. What began as an inside joke among Maxis developers slowly grew into one of the longest-running traditions in The Sims, and now we finally know how it all happened.

The Story Behind Llama Lore in The Sims Started Before the First Game

It turns out llamas were part of The Sims long before the original game even launched.

According to EA, Maxis once held a studio-wide vote to choose an unofficial mascot. Employees had three very unusual choices: a Boston tree fern, a beef tapeworm, or a llama. Thankfully for all of us, the llama won the vote and officially became the studio’s beloved mascot.

Not long after, the fluffy favorite made its first appearance in The Sims through the original game’s user manual, which featured the delightfully absurd book Making The Most of Your Llama. It was only the beginning of a tradition that has lasted for decades.

Hidden Llama References Have Been Everywhere

Once you know where to look, llamas seem to appear in nearly every generation of The Sims.

Over the years, players have discovered llama-themed clothing, furniture, school mascots, artwork, decorations, collectibles, and plenty of hidden jokes scattered throughout different games. Some references are obvious, while others are tucked away so cleverly that many fans never notice them.

The Sims 2 even included a memorable career chance card involving repeated llama bleating as an interrogation technique. Meanwhile, The Sims 2 Castaway introduced an ancient civilization devoted to a llama deity, complete with giant llama statues and mysterious relics.

Even The Sims 4 Jungle Adventure continues the tradition by letting adventurous Sims uncover ancient llama relics while exploring forgotten temples.

The Series Has Some Surprisingly Weird Llama Moments

Not every llama reference is cute.

Fans of The Urbz may remember finding llama jerky in a vending machine, while The Sims 4 Cool Kitchen Stuff Pack features artwork that appears to show butcher cuts of a llama. It’s one of those wonderfully bizarre jokes that only The Sims could get away with.

Then there’s one of the franchise’s strangest cheat codes from The Sims 3. Players can type enableLlamas on/off, but despite its promising name, the cheat actually does absolutely nothing. It’s simply another playful joke from the developers.

Cottage Living Finally Let Players Raise Real Llamas

For years, llamas mostly existed as background jokes and decorations.

That finally changed with The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack, which introduced fully interactive live llamas that Sims can raise inside animal sheds. Players can care for them, shear them for wool, and even dress them up in adorable outfits.

Interestingly, EA revealed that adding llamas wasn’t guaranteed. During development, the team actually voted between including llamas or sheep alongside cows. Once again, llamas won the election, making it their second historic victory inside Maxis.

Llama Drama Is Part of Sim Language

One of the funniest recurring jokes in The Sims has always been accusing another Sim’s mother of being a llama.

This classic insult became one of the franchise’s signature interactions because the writing team wanted Sims to exchange over-the-top insults without crossing into anything too offensive. Calling someone’s mother a llama became the perfect “Simsy” solution.

The joke even expanded into The Sims 3 Ambitions, where makeover professionals could refuse clients because they supposedly looked like a llama.

Developers Love Llamas Just as Much as Players

EA also shared that the llama tradition extends far beyond the games themselves.

The developers behind The Sims 4 High School Years were internally known as “The Llamas Team,” while everyone who worked on Cottage Living received plush llama toys that still decorate many desks around the studio.

During the pandemic, one manager even hired a real llama to appear during a virtual team social event. On top of that, Maxis’ annual ugly sweater competition regularly features llama-themed designs, many of which have inspired in-game clothing over the years.

The studio also uses the legendary “llamacorn,” a winged llama with a unicorn horn, as a development placeholder. Every so often, these mythical creatures accidentally sneak into the game, becoming fun little discoveries for observant players.

Long Live the Llama

After reading EA’s deep dive, it’s easy to see why llamas have become such a huge part of The Sims identity. What started as an office mascot has grown into one of gaming’s longest-running inside jokes, appearing in nearly every generation of the franchise in clever and unexpected ways.

The next time you’re playing, keep an eye out for llama references hiding around your Sims’ world. Chances are you’ll notice far more than you ever did before. And if EA continues this tradition, we probably haven’t seen the last of these lovable, fluffy troublemakers.

Final Thoughts

This was such a fun look behind the scenes, especially for longtime Simmers who have spotted llamas throughout the years without knowing how it all began. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out EA’s full feature and revisit some of your favorite Sims games to see how many llama references you can find.
