About Writing Songs in Sims 4
The Sims 4 has a singing career that allows you to make a living while as a singer/songwriter. It’s a great career for any musical and artistic Sim that aspires to be a star. There are many levels that you can progress through and advance, so it’s an exciting career path to pursue. But one of the biggest problems that simmers have is they don’t know how to write songs in Sims 4.
But before answering, I simply want to say why you want to know how to write songs in this game.
First of all, songs are how your Sims can promote themselves and become stars in the world of music. But also, licensing your own song is a great way to make a bit more money in Sims 4.
And so, I believe that a process of writing songs should be known to any simmer out there, regardless of how long they play the game whether they only have the base game or all DLCs.
That said, let’s talk about how to write songs in Sims 4!

How to Write Songs in Sims 4?
If you want to write songs in Sims 4, your Sim must own an instrument and be at least level 8 skill in that instrument. If you meet these requirements, all you need to do is click on the instrument and select “Write Song”. It can take up to 12 sim hours to write a song in Sims 4.
If you own the base game, then you have 3 options when it comes to instruments – piano, violin, and guitar. When you level up your skill in any of them, you’ll also unlock the interaction to write a song. However, the songs that your Sim will produce are only instrumental songs and he/she can’t sing along.
Why is this?
Well, to sing in Sims 4, you need the City Living expansion pack. City Living also allows any singer to write songs via their microphone and it only requires level 3 in any instrument. Once the song is created, your Sim will be able to play the song and sing along too. This DLC introduces the singing skill to the game, so it’s needed for singing.
What are the other instruments you can use to write songs in Sims 4? Here’s a helpful table to help you navigate in-game:
Instrument: | Requires: |
Piano | Base Game |
Guitar | Base Game |
Violin | Base Game |
Microphone (singing) | City Living |
Turntable (DJ mixing) | Get Together |
Computer (Media Production) | Get Famous |
Pipe Organ | Vampires |
That’s all you need to know on how to write songs in Sims 4. Now let’s talk about licensing songs.

How to License a Song in Sims 4?
Licensing a song in Sims 4 is actually pretty easy. There is only one requirement and that is to have level 9 instead of 8 in your instrument. So, one level higher.
Once you have written a song, go to your Sim’s mailbox and click “License Song”. You will then need to select your instrument and your song. And that’s how you license a song in Sims 4!
When you license a song, your Sim starts getting paid the next morning for the entire week. However, they won’t be able to create new songs with the same instrument.
Conclusion
As you can see, writing and licensing songs in Sims 4 is pretty simple. The hardest part by all means is leveling your skills in your instrument. If you’re super hardcore, this can take days or weeks to achieve, depending on how much you play the game. But if you’re using cheats, then you can quickly level up your instrument skill.
If you want to cheat your way up, here are the cheats you’re going to need for this.
That said, good luck and have fun!
