The Custom Family Relationships Mod adds new family relationship types, romance restrictions, dynasty support, and more for richer Sims stories.

Family storytelling is one of the best parts of The Sims 4, but sometimes the game’s default family system just isn’t flexible enough. That’s exactly what the new Custom Family Relationships Mod by lazarusinashes aims to improve, giving Simmers more ways to define important family connections without changing the official family tree.
Version 1.0 introduces brand-new family relationship bits that behave almost exactly like Maxis’ own family relationships. Whether you’re creating long-running legacy saves, found families, or reconnecting distant relatives, this mod gives players much more control over how Sims recognize one another.
Custom Family Relationships Mod Adds Two New Family Relationship Types
The biggest addition in this first release is two brand-new relationship bits that can be assigned whenever you need them.
The first is Distant Cousin, which is especially useful after the game’s normal distant family tracking disappears over time. The second is Considered Family, an all-purpose relationship for Sims who may not be biologically related but are still treated like family in your stories.
Both relationship types are fully integrated into the game’s Family category inside the Relationship Panel. They also support Family Dynamics, making them feel like natural extensions of the game’s existing relationship system rather than separate custom labels.

Romance Is Automatically Restricted Between Family Members
One of the most useful features is that these new family relationships automatically prevent romantic interactions.
Just like the creator’s previous No Romance for Extended Family mod, both Distant Cousin and Considered Family are flagged as family relationships. This blocks attraction, romance interactions, and even most compatible modded romance options, helping avoid awkward situations in story-driven saves.
These Sims also gain access to family-specific interactions such as Hug Lovingly, making the relationships feel authentic during everyday gameplay.
Existing Distant Relative Support Is Included
The mod also includes Maxis’ hidden Distant Relative relationship bit.
Normally, this relationship doesn’t manually track unless Sims are actually created within the same family. The Custom Family Relationships Mod lets players assign that relationship themselves when appropriate. However, if you assign it to Sims who are not truly distant relatives, the game will automatically remove it to preserve accuracy.
This makes it easier to repair family histories or reconnect relatives in older saves without permanently altering your family tree.

Easy Relationship Management Through the Actions Menu
Assigning these new family connections is simple.
Players can click either a Sim on the current lot or their portrait in the Relationship Panel. A new Actions pie menu appears, allowing the custom family bits to be added or removed whenever needed.
Because these are relationship bits rather than permanent family tree edits, you have complete freedom to change them throughout your save without worrying about long-term consequences.
Perfect for Dynasty and Legacy Gameplay
Legacy players will probably appreciate one feature more than anything else.
Once these relationship bits are assigned, those Sims can immediately be added to Dynasties just like regular family members. This makes the Custom Family Relationships Mod particularly useful for players using The Sims 4’s newer dynasty systems or building complex multigenerational stories that extend beyond the game’s default family tracking.
Whether you’re telling stories about adopted relatives, lifelong family friends, or branches of an enormous family tree, these new relationship types fit naturally into existing gameplay.
Built to Feel Like Official Maxis Family Relationships
A lot of work went into making these new relationship bits blend seamlessly with the base game.
Rather than creating entirely separate systems, the creator built them using new tuning that mirrors existing Maxis family relationships. The new bits inherit many of the same behaviors, including preventing relationship culling and supporting various expansion pack features.
For example, if you own Parenthood, Sims with these custom family tags can still participate in family events like receiving age-up gifts in the mail. They also inherit compatibility with pack-specific relationship tuning without requiring players to own every expansion.
The creator notes that the only significant compatibility concern involves mods that also edit relationships.relationship_track, since that resource controls what appears under the Family tab in the Relationship Panel.
More Family Relationship Types Are Already Planned
Version 1.0 is only the beginning.
Lazarusinashes has already shared several planned additions for future updates, including Ancient Ancestor, Distant Descendant, a generic Relative relationship, and a hidden Blacklist Romance relationship bit that blocks romance without officially classifying Sims as family.
These planned additions could make family storytelling even more flexible for players who enjoy rotational gameplay, historical saves, or deeply connected legacy families.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve ever wished The Sims 4 offered more ways to define important family relationships beyond the standard family tree, the Custom Family Relationships Mod is worth checking out. It expands storytelling possibilities while staying remarkably close to the way Maxis designed family relationships, making it feel like a natural extension of the game.
The Custom Family Relationships Mod is currently available through the creator’s Patreon. As future updates introduce even more relationship types, this could easily become an essential download for legacy players and storytellers alike. Don’t forget that XML Injector is required for this mod to function properly.
